Course Descriptions for 2019:

PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH I-II

This will be a 2 semester course that will focus on the language and practices of business in a globalized world.  We will focus on your Professional Development with special emphasis  given to practical job hunting strategies and interviewing skills. This course will help you become proficient in conducting business activities such as job hunting, negotiations, presentations and designing business strategies. As time permits we will also view films and discuss current topics that directly relate to you. Assessment will be based on participation coursework and a final exam or project.

There will be some special units in this course which focus on professional skills. In the spring semester, students will prepare a professional presentation and compete in a BACS presentation contest. In the fall semester students will practice specific language skills for business and professional communication, including meetings and telephoning. 

3. Teobesta Tesfa Endrias

(Thursdays, 2nd period)

This Professional English course I-II will focus on cultural themes while maintaining a business angle. The main aim is to help students develop their English at an advanced level to give them increased confidence in professional communication and etiquette, including conversation, discussion and a power point based presentation. In the spring, the course will pay special attention to the BACS and the Annual All Japan Student English Presentation contest, with the visit of special guests who will share their successful experience. In the fall, students will have simulation sessions involving meetings, telephoning, interviews and other practical skills needed in professional settings. Students will have ample opportunities to practice the topics and themes learnt in this class as they will be coordinated with other 3rd year Professional English courses.

4. Beverley Lafaye

(Thursdays, 3rd period)

Head for Business

Successful oral communication is an art, which can be learned, practised and perfected. This course aims to teach you how to express yourself well in small groups, meetings and public situations. The words ‘preparation’ and ‘presentation’ will be key in this class.

There will be some special units in this course, which focus on professional skills. In the spring semester, students will prepare a professional presentation and compete in a BACS presentation contest. In the fall semester students will practise specific language skills for business and professional communication, including meetings and telephoning, and simulate a full business meeting. You will have multiple opportunities for communication in various pair and group configurations.
