After the Fall (1964) 1
Miller は "Foreword to After the Fall" の中で "trial" 4 という語を用い、
Quentin: .... And, of course, despair can be a way of life; but you have to believe in it, pick it up, take it to heart, and move on again. Instead, I seem to be hung up. Slight pause. And the days and the months and now the years are draining away. A couple of weeks ago I suddenly became aware of a strange fact. With all this darkness, the truth is that every morning when I awake, I'm full of hope! With everything I know I open my eyes, I'm like a boy! For an instant there's some unformed promise in the air. I jump out of bed, I shave, I can't wait to finish breakfast and then, it seeps in my room, my life and its pointlessness. And I thought if I could corner that hope, find what it consists of and either kill it for a lie, or really make it mine....
This is not some crazy aberration of human nature to me. I can easily see the perfectly normal contractors and their cigars, the carpenters, plumbers, sitting at their ease over lunch pails; I can see them laying the pipes to run the blood out of this mansion; good fathers, devoted sons, grateful that someone else will die, not they, and how can one understand that, if one is innocent? If somewhere in one's soul there is no accomplice of that joy, that joy, that joy when a burden die...and leaves you safe?(83)意識の流れにおいて心的エネルギーを進行させた Quentin は、 「塔」 の 「イメージ」 が、 自分は 「正当である」 という人間の心理のもとに確立していると認識する。
Mickey: .... The Party? But I despise the Party, and have for many years. Just like you. Yet there is something, something that close my throat when I think of telling names. What am I defending? It's a dream now, a dream of solidarity. But the fact is, I have no solidarity with the people I could name excepting for you. And not because we were Communists together, but because we were young together. Because we when we talked it was like some brotherhood opposed to all the world's injustice. Therefore, in the name of that love, I ought to be true to myself now. And the truth, Lou, my truth, is that I think the Party is a conspiracy let me finish. I think we were swindled; they took our lust for the right and used it for Russian purposes. And I don't think we can go on turning our back on the truth simply because reactionaries are saying it.What I propose is that we try to separate our love for one another from this political morass.
Mother: Darling, there is never a depression for great people! The first time I felt you move, I was standing on the beach at Rockaway....
Question has gotten up.
Question, to Listener: But power. Where is the...
Mother: And I saw a star, and it got bright, and brighter, and brighter! And suddenly it fell, like some great man had died, and you were being pulled out of me to take his place, and be a light, a light in the world!(94)
Quentin: .... But no pill can make us innocent. Throw them in the sea, throw death in the sea and all your innocence. Do the hardest thing of al see your own hatred and live!
Quentin: You want to die, Maggie, and I really don't know how to prevent it. But it struck me that I have been playing with your life out of some idiotic hope of some kind that you'd come out of this endless spell. But there's only one hope, dear you've got to start to look at what you're doing. (147)
Quentin: Yes, I lied. Every day. We are all separate people. I tried not to be, but finally one is a separate person. I have to survive too, honey.
Quentin's final realization, and the conclusion of his trial by his own mind and conscience, paradoxically both finds his guilty and sets him free to hope, for Holga is the embodiment of hope; ....(Griffin, 126)人間は自己探求において、「罪」と希望を得るための 「自由」 との間の逆説に直面する、 と Griffin は述べている。

2 | Mr. Miller is dancing a spiritual striptease while the band plays mea culpa.... He has created a shameless piece of tabloid gossip, an act of exhibitionism which makes us all voyeurs. (Robert Brustein, "Arthur Miller's Mea Culpu," New Republic, 8 February 1964, 26-27)

7 | The tower, observes Stephan S. Stanton, is a symbol of the "extension of guilt from the personal to the social" level. The interrelationship of betrayals on the personal, professional, and social levels finds effective expression in Miller's impressionistic style. (Griffin, 127) In After the Fall, betrayals is both personal and political. Quentin's proclaims that no one can be innocent after the Holocaust, that while his brothers died in the camps, they also built them. (Janet N. Balakian, "Miller in the sixties," Cambridge Companion, 121)
8 | Erich Fromm は The Heart of Man において、 人間の攻撃性を二つの悪性形態で論じている。
(Fromm, 132) |
